                                                        Welcome to The Garden...

This month in the garden...pumpkins, beans and bees..Oh my!

FINALLY!  Eggplant...showed up.  This is a very slow growing vegetable.  I
placed them in the sunniest location in the yard, where they would get at
least 6 hours of sun...the plants produced beautiful flowers, then got
blossom drop...I read up on how to cure that by adding manure. So I got
a bag of moo-nure from The Home Depot.  I added it to the planter
several times over a period of several weeks.  Then the rains came...
and I patiently waited...and now...EUREKA!  I have eggplant.  Look for
a babba ghanoush dip recipe in Da Kitchen section. 8/29/2009

Earlier this month...

Look what has finally made it's appearance in the garden...that's right, the l'il
pumpkin.  See the tiny yellow fluffy ball.  The expectation is to be a GREAT pump-
kin, over 300 pounds.  Although, both male and female flowers grow on the same
vine, only the female produces the pumpkin.  (You Grow Girl!) I probably will hand
pollinate the female flower with the male flower once it opens.  Below are only
male plants.

Hurra-a-a-a-y!  The bees are back!  After last year's colony collapse.  The bees
again make their welcome appearance in the garden.  Doing what bees do best.

That's right l'il fella, the cafeteria is open.  A bee fact: a bee produces 1/12th of a tsp
of honey in it's lifetime.  This is one of 50 to 100 trips daily this worker will make to
collect his bounty.  More about bees click here.

We've got green beans...last year I had harvested so many green beans by this time
that I was sick of eating them and started to give them away at the office.

My friend gave me your website and I rediscovered it in culling my "favorites". You haven't posted lately, but I enjoyed reading the garden section from Sept. My garden is dismal. I need SOS help. And sun! (Kensington Maryland)

Joyeaux! Thanks for the comment.  I have been posting, however due to limitations of the blog I use, I have had to be creative.  I post to the home page Our House Under Construction almost daily by adding a new link, Fall Harvest is the latest.  Click on that and you will see what I recently harvested from my square foot gardens in the side yard.  Click on Welcome Great Pumpkin and you will see the results of trying to grow a 300 pound pumpkin in the city.  I have to publish updates under older dates so that they don't usurp my Home page, and put the real date within the entry.  If this were a website, instead of a blogsite, I wouldn't have to go thru these contortions.  Also, I am trying to develop a pet page, so if you have a pet and like to dress it up click on Smokey Inc. or Growing up Gotti, or Kat Kronicles and comment and share your pics!  stephscip@yahoo.com
